Did you know that pandas are part of the bear family?
Despite their adorable appearance and gentle nature, a group of pandas is actually called "an embarrassment". This may come as a surprise to many people, who might expect such a beloved and highly recognizable animal to have a more flattering collective noun. However, the origins of the term "embarrassment" are not as negative as they might first appear.
The word "embarrassment" in this context actually comes from the French word "embarras", which means "obstacle" or "hindrance". In the 19th century, English-speaking hunters and naturalists who traveled to China to study and collect pandas quickly adopted this term to describe the animal's unusual behavior in captivity.
In the wild, pandas are solitary animals, spending most of their time alone in the bamboo forests of central China. However, when placed in captivity, pandas often become stressed and agitated by the presence of other pandas, leading to strange behaviors like pacing, vocalizing, and urinating on themselves. This odd behavior made it difficult for early caretakers to breed pandas in captivity and earned the animals their unfortunate nickname.
Despite the less-than-flattering name, pandas remain one of the world's most beloved and recognized animals. With their distinctive black-and-white markings, cute round faces, and clumsy movements, it's easy to see why they hold such a special place in our hearts. As conservation efforts continue to focus on preserving the remaining wild panda populations and expanding captive breeding programs, it's more important than ever to understand the unique needs and behaviors of these fascinating creatures.
A group of pandas can also be called several different names including:
A bamboo of pandas
A cupboard of pandas
It is known that Pandas eat mostly bamboo. Pandas in the wild can spend up to 16 hours each day eating up to 40 pounds of bamboo shoots. That's the life of a true fat panda!
So, the next time you encounter a group of pandas, whether in the wild or in a zoo, remember that their unusual behavior and social dynamics are what earned them the nickname "an embarrassment". But rather than feeling embarrassed for them, let's appreciate the beauty and wonder of these incredible animals, and work together to ensure that they continue to thrive for generations to come.

And the bamboo that pandas eat is different than the bamboo used to make Big Boy Bamboo Big and Tall T-Shirts.
Pandas usually travel in pairs or small family groups. So if you see an embarrassment of pandas, they are probably not a couple of panda friends out for a walk.
And most importantly...
There's nothing embarrassing about me - Big Boy Bamboo's official cartoon panda mascot - my name is Paunch Panda.
Our Big Boy Bamboo t-shirts for men are made for big guys, and the choice to use viscose from bamboo is no coincidence. Bamboo viscose is perfect for big boys! Here’s why bamboo is the perfect choice for big-size t-shirts.
